Welcoming the LGBTQ Community

The percentage of same-sex households who camp has increased over the last 3 years to 10%; 46% of those have children.  With new census data including same-sex households, we can now start to figure out the percentage of the camping industry made up by same-sex couples.

According to the U.S. census, 4.5% of the US population identifies as LGBTQ. Fifty-eight percent of those are married, equaling almost 7 million same-sex households in America. If 10% of that population camps, then the LGBTQ community makes up 9% of all campers.

So, how can you reach the LGBTQ community? It is simple. Advertise that you are LGBTQ family friendly. There are still many places in the United States, not really Canada (good job there), where the LGBTQ community does not feel 100% safe. Adding a simple banner to the bottom of your website or even as a feature, will bring you big business within this community.

Yes, it is 2019. Love is love and it is probably a no-brainer for you. However, for those within the LGBTQ community, when traveling, it is nice to have a little reassurance they will be accepted and defended from bigotry if problems do arise.
